Big Things: Safety Pin
I saw this amazing "big thing" oustide the de Young Museum in San Francisco last month, actually, a sculpture by Claes Oldenburg. Just imagine the size of the diaper that would go along with it!

Big Thing in Chicago
I heard about this big bat (called "Batcolumn" by artist Claes Oldenburg) and I just had to see it. Here's what the website Explore Chicago says about it: "Like all of Oldenburg’s monuments, Batcolumn combines a humorous and irreverent attitude toward popular objects with meticulous construction details and handling of scale and proportion. It can alternately be seen as a reference to historical monumental columns, a salute to the American institution of baseball or a tribute to the steel industry."All true. All I can say is, "That's one big bat!"

One Big Christmas Tree
Ever see such a huge Christmas tree? We saw it at Epcot in Orlando, Florida in November where it was a balmy 85F. Merry Christmas to everyone. Enjoy!

Big Things: Basketball Player
When in Orlando, Florida last month, we visited City Walk at Universal Studios and came across this absolutely gigantic basketball player in front of NBA City, a basketball themed restaurant.
What size running shoe do you suppose he wears?

Big Things: Spider
This gargantuan bronze spider, called Maman by Louise Bourgeois, weighs 8,165 kg (18,000 lbs) and carries a sac of twenty white marble eggs under her belly. It resides outside the front door of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

Big Things: Strawberry #2
This big strawberry is in almost as rough shape as the last one I added to my big things list. It's in East Hawkesbury, Ontario at another pick-your-own strawberry place. This one is bigger and has a happy face. Cute.

Big Things: Strawberry
I found this "big thing" in Lancaster, Ontario about a half hour from my house. This giant strawberry is in need of a new paint job. But it does makes a good companion with the giant blueberry I saw in Oxford, Nova Scotia some years back. Now all I need is a giant raspberry and I'll have one, big fruit salad.

Big Things: King Lear
I came across this "Big Thing" in Chicago for my ongoing collection. This one is a giant King Lear. Cool. To see all of them, click here: Ronna's Big Things.

Big Things: Apple
I seem to be on a roll with "Big Things." So here's another: The Big Apple in Colbourne, Ontario. It advertises a restaurant, small zoo (mostly bunnies) and a huge pie-baking enterprise where they sell hundreds of thousands of apple pies (and various other flavours too). Imagine how many pies could be made from this huge apple?

Zucchini Time
Although not formally considered a big thing for my collection of "Big Things" (click on "big things" label below this post, to see them), the largest zucchini I ever grew was 17.5 pounds. In 2004 it won first prize in the largest zuke contest held at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum's Fall Festival. I've entered every year with varying results. This year's Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, September 21st. I'm not sure my garden holds any real contenders. Stay tuned.

Glengarry Highland Games
On the first weekend of August, the tiny town of Maxville, Ontario (pop. 700) hosts the Glengarry Highland Games when the town swells to over 20,000 people! Everyone is busy getting ready to welcome the masses (and the massed bands) this weekend.Since it's only a 10 minute drive from my home, I asked my friend Peggi to snap this photo of me in front of the welcome banner and the hand-hewn MacDonald piper. Does this count as a "Big Thing" for my collection, I wonder?

Big Things: Update
My collection of "Big Things" (click to see 'em) keeps growing. Here I am with Paul Bunyan's ox Babe in California last summer. Unfortunately, Babe had a small accident and lost his head. To see more click on my friend John's blog: Oxbow Congregation

Big Things: Axe
There is so much ice on the roof above my front door. And it's started to melt and then refreeze. So guess who had to exit the house via the back door, over a few high drifts, in her pj's, to get the morning newspaper? Next job was to axe the ice away from the front of the door. Put me in mind of the world's largest axe we saw a few years back in Nackawic, New Brunswick. We got there at dusk so the photo is a bit iffy. Just means we'll have to go back and reshoot!
