Happy birthday to me!
I love making my own birthday cake! People seem bothered by the fact that I have to make my own cake but I love experimenting and frankly, it's the only time in the year that I only have to please myself. In this case, I did a sort of self-portrait in cake...

Just ducky
When my co-worker Scott asked me to make a cake for he and his wife's upcoming baby shower, I jumped at the chance. They loved the idea of a duckling theme and since they are leaving the gender of the baby a mystery until birth, "Waddle it be?" worked out perfectly.

Elephant and balloon baby cakes
A baby shower celebration with an elephant and balloon theme. Gender neutral colours because we weren't sure whether it was a boy or a girl.
As it turned out the ultrasound was scheduled for the Friday before the party and guess what? It's a girl!
So the cupcakes ended up being gender reveal cupcakes, stuffed with pink buttecream filling. What fun!

Oh Lord, won't you buy me...
...a Mercedes Benz? Always been one of my favourite tunes.
Peter, who is general manager of a Mercedes Benz dealership, was celebrating a milestone birthday, so a road scene with a wee vehicle seemed to be the thing to do. (The car is a vintage model with a hood and trunk that actually open. It's not edible.)
Happy birthday to Peter. Hope he loved his birthday cake!

Happy 13th Harry!
Harry loves motocross so I made him a cake that I thought would make him happy.
Here's Harry with the cake and he did love it!

Gone fishing
Lucky Marcel lives near the St. Lawrence River and goes fishing as often as he likes. For his birthday, his wife Lori asked me to make him a fish cake. And so, here it is. I hope Marcel got to go fishing on his special day.

Ready for my close up
My friend Deb is an amazing photographer!
Wasn't I lucky to discover that she was the official photog at Joyce's 90th birthday.
I asked her to send me a few pix of the kitty cat and butterfly cake I made for the occasion.
Since it was one of my all-time faves, I was so happy that she took quite a few snaps...and sent them my way.
Many happy returns of the day to Joyce. Lookin' great at 90 years young!

Cat and butterfly cake
My friend Mandy's grandma was celebrating her 90th birthday and I was asked to do her cake. Mandy told me that Joyce loves cats and flowers and I could do whatever I liked designing the cake. I had so much fun!
The cake was half chocolate, half vanilla, the kitten was made with Rice Krispy treats, covered with fondant, the butterfly was made of gumpaste and the daisies were fondant.
Apparently Joyce was delighted with the cake and it fed 50 or so guests celebrating her big day. Happy birthday Joyce!

Buttercream tulip cake
My friend Peter gave me a set of "Russian tips." I had seen them on various websites and figured it was time to give them a try. What fun. I love working in buttercream and if you stripe the bag with different colours, the tulips are striped too.
I thought this cake covered with beautiful tulips was a perfect statement now that spring is finally here.

Deer hunter cake
Marthe called the other day to say that hubby Robert was celebrating a big birthday. He's a deer hunter and she wanted a cake in the shape of a deer. I sent her some other ideas that might be fun and we both decided this was the way to go. A hunter and a deer, sitting side-by-side roasting marshmallows. How fun is that?

Baby shower
A friend of mine is having a granddaughter and was hosting a baby shower for her daughter. Since it's going to be a girl, we concentrated on using pink. And since her daughter calls her husband "Bear," the baby is called "Baby Bear." Here's the cake for the shower.
As a takeaway, sugar cookies decorated as sleeping baby girls were given as thank you gifts.
The cookies were individually wrapped and were waiting at the door as you left.
And here's the adorable mom-to-be Jennifer with the cake I made for her shower. Best of luck to Jen and her new arrival.

Cake and more cake!
Okay, so I love making cakes. I really do! A while ago I figured some folks really don't want to see my garden, my cats, my life and maybe all they want to see is cakes. So, I made a cake blog. All cake. All the time. If you'd like to see it, click here: ronnascakeblog.wordpress.com/.
And if you REALLY like it, please subscribe to it and then you'll never miss a cake! The button is there on the right hand side. Thanks!

Issie hits the jackpot!
I made this cake for Issie who turned 96 yesterday. She loves playing the one-armed bandit.
Issie looks terrific! I especially love this photo with her hand on the lever, in this case a jaw breaker, ready to play!
And I also love this pic, with Issie making sure that the cake is cut correctly. Go Issie go!

Retrospectives
I've been making cakes for enough years now that I've had many returning customers. I've been making birthday cakes for my favourite triplets,
Ela, Nikki and Leah since they were five years old. Last summer I did their 10th birthday. So much fun to see them growing up.

Cheryl loves flowers and after a cake, we switched to cupcakes, each dozen with a different theme.
I've done three cakes for sweet Famke who chooses her theme every year,
one year a fairy land, another year a nod to her cello/piano lessons and last year, her calico kitty Liko.

A few cakes...
So fun to do cakes in the winter when I'm not worried about humidity! This one was for a friend who celebrated a milestone birthday a few weeks back. She loves flowers and is passionate about her garden. As well, she's an accomplished artist. So I thought I'd do a different sort of floral cake. Instead of classic buttercream roses or fondant flowers, I piped them from coloured chocolate and put them on a quadruple layer chocolate cake. Death by chocolate!
Another friend celebrated a not-so-milestone birthday but since we missed the big one last year, we decided to celebrate anyhow. Dane absolutely loves Cherry Blossoms so I made a cake that looked like a giant Cherry Blossom. I hear he really liked it.

Hospital fundraiser
I made this cake for our local hospital's annual fundraiser and auction held last night.
It was so much fun making the teeny tiny cards, bouquet of flowers and of course, try of food -- all made of fondant.
And here's the poor little soul, lying sick in his hospital bed while everyone enjoys dinner around him!
I'm happy it got a good price at auction with the funds going to the hospital.

Hail Caesar!
I made this cake for Richard's birthday. Yes it's a cake!
I saw a salad cake on the Internet and just knew I had to make Richard one because he just loves Caesar salad.
I saw a salad cake on the Internet and just knew I had to make Richard one because he just loves Caesar salad.
And he did love it! Kinda strange to put birthday candles in a salad? Naaah.
But once I served it up, it was pretty obvious it was a carrot cake disguised as a Caesar salad.
And this is what it looked like after a few days...two slices left for our lunches tomorrow.
Surprise over, all we're left with is yummy carrot cake and lemony buttercream.
Happy birthday to Richard!

So long dear friends...
It's tough to say goodbye to dear friends who have been your neighbours for 28 years.
There was a potluck dinner at their place this weekend where friends gathered to say so long.
I brought the cake.! I figured saying goodbye in many languages would be a way to wish them well.
Thank goodness for Google! And thank goodness for the countless hours I spent hand lettering at art school all those years ago...
